Puck Life • 1st May 2010 Hockey's Best Kept Secret: Shattuck-St. Mary's I wrote this feature on Shattuck-St. Mary's prestigious hockey program for Puck Life, an online magazine local to Canada. This story digs into the program's history, culture, the NHL players the program has produced (such as Sidney Crosby, Jonathan Toews and Zach Parise) and what makes it America's top boarding school hockey program.
Maple Grove Magazine • 1st April 2010 The Golden Age: Caleb Truax Pro boxer Caleb Truax seemingly came from nowhere in 2010 to take the pro boxing world by storm with a 14-0 record. For this feature in the April 2010 issue of Maple Grove Magazine, he talked about his local roots, described the momentum behind his unprecedented journey to the top, and his trainer and promoter chimed in on what makes Truax such a special talent.
Faribault Daily News • 15th August 2008 Faribault's Greatest Show on Ice: The Shattuck Alumni Game This was no typical alumni fundraiser. The Shattuck St-Mary's/Faribault 2008 Celebrity Hockey Game featured a plethora of NHL players who came together to raise money for the local Faribault Hockey Association. The most interesting thing was how all these pro players continually came back to a small town to play in front of a small crowd. They shared such a unique bond with each other and the town.
Faribault Daily News • 12th July 2008 Living a Dream: Marty Mjelleli Signs Pro Contract This profile on Marty Mjelleli was especially important to the Faribault and Shattuck-St. Mary's hockey communities. Mjelleli is a huge ambassador of the Shattuck program and his hometown of Faribault. He was the one that organized the annual Shattuck almuni game tradition and he keeps many of the current and former Shattuck players in touch.
Faribault Daily News • 22nd June 2008 Former Shattuck Stars Shine at NHL Draft The journey these three men took from prep to college to pro hockey was a pleasure to cover. It all culminated at the NHL Draft, which determined where they'd potentially get to live out their pro hockey dreams. I reached them by phone to get their reactions and wrote this story on deadline for a daily newspaper.
Faribault Daily News • 8th June 2008 A Game for the Ages: The Shattuck Hockey Alumni Bond This Faribault Daily News sports column gave readers an exclusive look behind the curtains at the locally (and nationally, considering all the NHL players participating) famous Shattuck alumni game. It's the only prep alumni game where you'll find a 70-year-old along the boards with an NHL All-Star, and this column captured both perspectives.
Faribault Daily News • 22nd April 2008 Zach Will Be Back: The Parise Profile I was lucky enough to get an exclusive interview with Zach Parise following the NHL Playoffs in 2008. This was before he played for the Minnesota Wild and during his tenure with the New Jersey Devils, but because he was a Shattuck St.-Mary's alumnus and that school was one of my beats for the Faribault Daily News, I was able to make some connections and arrangements.
