Weaver Lake Elementary school was honored as a 2009 Magnet School of Excellence. This cover story, published in the September 2009 issue of Maple Grove Magazine, focuses on the unique qualities that define magnet schools and what makes Weaver Lake Elementary the cream of the crop.

I worked with local high schools to create a nomination process in which I ultimately chose the honorees based on academic achievements, extracurricular activities, volunteer hours and athletic accomplishments.

This short story in the June 2009 issue of Maple Grove Magazine is about how Red Hot Robots summer class teaches kids (grades 1-7) how to--you guessed it--build robots. Not only is the class concept interesting, but the main source in the story, Colin Kilbane, the operations director at Saint Paul's imaginative learning program Mad Science, has an intriguing theory: get kids hooked on science before junior high, or the likelihood of them sustaining any serious level of interest in the subject dwindles drastically. The challenge this story presented was squeezing a lot of relevant info into a small space.
